For this week of safety month, the National Safety Council is focusing on roadway safety. There’s a lot that goes into making the roads safe for everyone, but we’d like to take a second to focus on being safe in construction zones.
Safety in work zones is a serious issue and something field workers face almost every day. Here’s some statistics to show you just how serious it is:
  • From 2011-2020, 63% of worker deaths were caused by the worker being struck by a vehicle.
  • From 2003-2020, 2,222 workers died at road construction sites.
  • Deaths in work zones have increased almost 11% from 2020 to 2021, rising from 863 to 956.
There are measures companies take to keep their workers safe, like road signage and high visibility gear. But what can you do to help?
  • Stay off your cell phone
  • Reduce your speed
  • Plan ahead and avoid the area, if possible
  • Give space to large vehicles
No matter where you’re driving its important stay alert, but take some extra care when the safety of road workers is in your hands.
